Why Peniche?
Peniche occupies an exceptional position on Portugal's Atlantic coast. Its exposed headlands, rocky shores, beaches and harbour create opportunities to observe seabirds, coastal species and migration within a relatively small area.
At the western edge of the peninsula, Cabo Carvoeiro provides an especially important vantage point for watching birds moving along the Atlantic coast.

Cabo Carvoeiro is one of Portugal's best-known seawatching locations. Its exposed position on the western edge of the Peniche peninsula provides an excellent vantage point for observing seabirds moving along the Atlantic coast.
The Peniche Seabird Observatory carries out standardized monitoring from this location, building a long-term record of seabird migration and marine mammal occurrence.

When to go seawatching in Peniche
Summer
Cory's Shearwaters can be prominent offshore, while post-breeding movements gradually begin to build.
Autumn
Late summer and autumn, especially from August to November, are the main period for seabird migration past Peniche.
Winter
Winter can bring gannets, auks, seaducks and other marine species, depending strongly on weather and sea conditions.
Weather note
Weather can dramatically influence seawatching. Westerly and north-westerly winds often bring seabirds closer to the coast and can produce particularly interesting movements.

The Berlengas archipelago seen from Peniche
The Berlengas
Just offshore from Peniche, the Berlengas archipelago adds another important dimension to local birdwatching. The islands support a breeding colony of Cory's Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis), one of the most characteristic seabirds of the Portuguese Atlantic.
